"If you're not with us, you're against us."

Intolerance is a universal theme that is exemplified not only inBeauty and the Beast but also in The Crucible.  No where in the play is this theme demonstrated more than in the following quote by Danforth:

"But you must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there is no road between."

Click on the link below to get an idea of how prevalent this theme is not only in fictional works, but also in our society at large.

  1. “You are either with us or against us”

In this article, president Bush talks about fighting terrorism. He explains that it is a very big deal and he also said you are either on one side or the other. “Some nations don't want to contribute troops and we understand that. Other nations can contribute intelligence-sharing. ... But all nations, if they want to fight terror, must do something.” He is saying that all nations must contribute to something if they want to fight terror. "Over time it's going to be important for nations to know they will be held accountable for inactivity," he said. "You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror.” This relates to the Danforth and Gaston’s message because Bush is saying there is no room in-between sides in such a serious subject and that is about the same as Danforth and Gaston’s message, “You are either with us or against us.”

  2. In the FOX News article “Till we run ‘out of fuel and bullets’: Jordan’s king vows to crush ISIS”, a strong sense of absolutism and extremism is demonstrated by ISIS. This week, a video surfaced of the Islamic State burning a Jordanian pilot, Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, alive. This sparked large-scale riots and civil instability in Jordan, and the king Abdullah has promised to wreak havoc upon ISIS. “You’re either with us, or against us” strongly reflects the situation that has been boiling in Iraq and Syria recently. ISIS does not hesitate to kill any who oppose them, whether it be neutral American, British or Japanese journalists. Any territory that ISIS doesn’t control; to them is considered hostile and anti-Muslim. To what extent will the representatives of a peace-loving religion go to establish a new Caliphate?

“Who is Nigeria’s Boko Haram’s islamists?” In 2002 Muhammad Yusuf started a small school in Nigeria that offered alternative islamic education. This school became very popular due to existing muslim support and close proximity to most families. In 2009 Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad a group made of students and staff as well as allies of the school started to run minor militant attacks on Nigerian government and police. The military captured and killed Muhammad Yusuf and displayed his corpse on national TV announcing that the group was done with. In 2014 the group kidnapped 276 girls who will never been seen again. Later in 2014 the group (now Boko Haram) announced a caliphate. They claim to be true muslims and things like western education, democratic elections and wearing pants make everyone else non believers and in the words of their new leader. “All those nonbelievers must convert or die”.

  4. Cuomo’s Education Agenda Sets Battle Lines With Teachers’ Unions

This article is about Governor Cuomo’s view on the public school systems and teachers’ unions and how he plans to change them in his second term. Cuomo says that the test the teachers have to take is too easy to pass and is difficult to fire teachers. Kate Taylor, the writer of the article, states that charter schools seem to be the popular alternative to public schools. Karen E. Magee, the president of New York State United Teachers, said “He (Cuomo) has declared war on the public schools.” She also stated that she would stand with the teachers, parents and students and are very confident they will win. This relates to Danforth’s and Gaston’s message because the public school systems are fighting for what they think is right and so are the politicians. In this case, there isn't much of a middle party and will always be a two way street between the teachers association and Governor Cuomo.

  5. The NRA vs. America
    By Tim Dickinson

This article is about the argument of whether to stop the NRA, which is the National Rifle Association who’s primary mission is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, or to keep them to serve for what they were meant to do. Most family members agree that using guns is not the way to go about things when it could risk the lives of their children and others. Three out of four people believe that background checks should be completed before every gun purchase. In this case, you are either for keeping the NRA or against it as thought by Gaston and Danforth.

  6. Article: “Plea for Caution in Russia” by Vladimir Putin

In this article Vladimir Putin explains how the rest of the world views America, not as a model democratic nation, but as a bully pressuring other countries to be on their side. They use the well known phrase “You’re either with us or against us” o do these things. It shows how a country can be swayed into siding with one country just because they are scared of it and don’t want to be on the receiving end of potential wars. One of the most current things is America’s strike against Syria, and their inability to become a democratic nation because of extremist groups who refuse to due to differing religions in the country. Although these groups are only created because of the threats of violence and mass weaponry on their country if they don’t want to listen to another country. So is it really Syria’s fault for not becoming democratic or is it really America’s for pushing the Syrians too hard.

  7. In the article “ KING KONG VS. GODZILLA ” written by Lauren Collins she states that there is a crisis going on with Time Warner Cable. Fox 5 News has demanded more money for their show to be aired on Time Warner Cable television. Many people who have a contract with TWC do not want to lose one of their favorite networks just because Fox wants more money. TWC now has a saying “Roll Over or Get Tough”. This is basically stating either customers pay three hundred percent more or they go without Channel 5 Fox. Fox news states that their is a high demand for their channel and no one can live with out it. So TWC created a survey online to see how customers actually felt. Ninety-five percent of customers said that TWC should get tough and fight for what their customers want without having to pay extra money. This article applies to what Danforth’s and Gaston’s message because the two men had they saying “you’re either with us or against us”. Time Warner Cable has the choice to either pay more money or forget that Channel 5 Fox News was ever invented.

  8. In the CNN article "Measles outbreak: Different states, different rules on vaccinations", Holly Yann writes about the most recent outbreak of the potentially fatal disease. Comparing to the yearly number of cases in the United States from 2001-2011, California has already exceeded the average number for the whole country according to the CDC. Although there is a vaccination to prevent the measles, the vaccine is only mandatory in certain states. Other states have created exemptions towards it regarding to an individuals religious and philosophical beliefs, or simply a parents personal belief towards the vaccine. The illness has sparked much controversy between states. Those who do not require a child to be vaccinated and have these exemptions may be seen as less strict or against the vaccination compared to the states who have made it a necessity for a child to be vaccinated regardless of beliefs. This relates to Danforth’s message of being either with or against a certain topic due to the dividing of states regarding the pro-vaccination states and the anti.

  10. In the article, “You are either with us or against us”, President Bush talks about the fact that there is a very slim chance the United States would be staying neutral in the war against terrorism. He explained that this situation was a big deal. If you weren’t with the war against terrorism, you were against it. President Bush stated, “This is an evil man we’re dealing with (Osama bin Laden), and I wouldn't put it past him to develop evil weapons to try to harm civilizations as we know it. And that’s why we must prevail, that’s why we must win.” This article relates to Gaston because Bush speaks about how there is no non-siding because you're either with or against the fight.

  11. In the article, “U.S. Research Lab Lets Livestock Suffer in Quest for Profit,” on New York Times, by Michael Moss, the author talks about a remote research center on the Nebraskan plains where scientists are using surgery and breeding techniques to re-engineer the farm animal to fit the needs of the 21st century meat industry. There are, however, some complications. Some animals produce more babies and most of them come out deformed or weakened. A taxpayer-financed federal institution called the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center conducts these experiments. They are okay with completing the experiments cause it produces more meat that is less fatty and easier to chew, but critics, who are against them, find that the meat isn’t fresh and causes disease in the end. Why follow someone who is mistreating animals just for the sake of research? The meat industry is with the center cause it prospers from the increase production of meat, but about 10 million piglets are crushed each year. To animal lovers this is a crime so they feel like it is their job to ban the research of farm animals. Danforth’s statement, “If you are not with the court, then you are against it,” relates to this article because you can’t really be in between it. Many people might have mixed feelings, but you are either for the research of animals to make profit or you are against it because it is ruining the livestock.

In this article Gina Hall from the Wrap.com talks about how American journalist James Foley was violently beaten, water boarded and starved while imprisoned by terrorist group ISIS. This shows ISIS attitude which is “you’re either with us or against us”. If you don’t support ISIS then they want to kill you, which means its pretty much ISIS against the world. ISIS isn’t afraid of letting people know this either, they posted the video of one of their members beheading American journalist James Foley along with other people from different countries. Foley and 22 other civilians were captured by ISIS and beaten and starved and some may still be now proving the ISIS is a strict and brutal organization.

  16. In this article titled ‘NYSUT plans to demonstrate at Suffolk dinner featuring Cuomo’, Richard Schaffer states that the 2 percent tax cap on public education will lead to downfall. The NYSUT represents teachers, school-related professionals, and professionals in education, along with other education-related occupations. Members of the NYSUT plan to protest the Suffolk Democratic dinner taking place on April 28, due to Gov. Andrew M Cuomo’s expected appearance. Cuomo and his supporters are for the idea of the 2 percent tax cap on public education, but those actually working in the force are stating it will absolutely kill public school learning as a whole. Tony Felicio, Connetquot’s union president, stated “not only is it important to send a loud and clear message to Cuomo, but it is just as important to send a loud and clear message to Cuomo’s political supporters who will be in attendance on the 28th ,“2 percent tax cap ... is going to ultimately kill public education” and candidates “need to know you’re either with us or against us...period.” As a summary to Felicio’s speech, he basically says that is Cuomo does not agree about the tax cap, there will be a protest, and until the situation is fixed, there is no other way. This relates to Gaston because the NYSUT is giving no option and is clearly saying you’re either with them or against them.

The author of this article is Salma Abdelaziz, Sarah Sirgany, and Josh Levs. This article is about how in Egypt the police forces and government are putting many of the supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsy to death. According to Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui of Amnesty International, “Todays death sentences are yet another example of the bias of the Egyptian criminal justice system.” He also stated how these “mass death sentences” in police killings are becoming routine in Egypt “regardless of the facts.” This relates to the message of Danforth and Gaston because the Egyptian government is barley even giving these people trial and executing them for having an opposing view of the country’s government. Title: Bush Urges Anti-Terror Allies to Act
    BBC
    Tuesday, 6 November, 2001

This article is an analysis of the statements President George W. Bush made shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Bush was quoted as saying, “All nations, if they want to fight terror, must do something... You're either with us or you're against us.” This quote is a great example of the language used by politicians and world leaders to gain support by questioning the patriotism of those who oppose them. Using this statement, he also makes leaders of other countries and their people, such as the UK and France, feel that their lack of willingness to aid in the war on terror sends a message that they are against the US; one of their most powerful allies. The “with us or against us” mentality is a political power play that aims to place one’s allegiance in whether or not they agree with something that is not in their best interest; and it always works.

  22. With the saying “you are either with us or against us”, there is various topics that this quote could be used as a quick description to how the topic is appealed to the public. This is extremely relevant to the topic of LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender). Specifically focusing on an extreme case that takes place in town in Georgia in the year of 2013. This story became a major topic because of where one particular student goes to school. Tristan (not his real name but protected since if he was exposed he would be expelled), attends a private Christian day school where he was brought up to think being gay “was an abomination”. After receiving support from friends of his boyfriends (attends a different school), Tristan began to realize he is not alone. This situation is considered an extreme case because of how the school reacts to it’s students being gay. In one instance, the school found out that one girl was a lesbian and “they made her go in front of the entire school and tell them, she was kicked out the next day”. Students are not only scared to come out to their friends but their parents as well. The people growing up in this generation in that area are brought up to think that something is disturbingly wrong with their attraction to the same sex. In conclusion, this case relates to Gaston or Danforth because students who are LGBT are afraid to stand up for the ones who are being threatened by straight students who will go to the principle and be expelled. In this society you are not allowed to stand up for the people who need it the most because if you do not only could you be expelled but neglected from most of society just simple because of who attracted to. “..when it comes to being gay, everyone is in agreement that it’s wrong”.

This has been a quote highly remarked by not just the public but by professional athletes. Ferguson, Missouri has been recently marked on the map due to the deaths caused by local policemen. Riots have broken out because of these deaths. As read in the article 28 year old Michael Brown was killed for committing a minor crime. Policemen are suppose to be seen has social figures in society and heroes. The many people of Ferguson have been forced into thinking that these policemen that are keeping their town safe are now making their town even more vulnerable. Some people think racism may have been involved due to the fact that the victim Michael Brown was african american and the policeman was caucasian. Multiple cases of police brutality have been reported all throughout the United States. The people of Ferguson are taking a stand, and if your not with them your against them.

  27. The Stealth War on Abortion

In the Rolling Stone article “The Stealth War on Abortion”, Jane Reitman discusses the opposition that several states in the United States have laws preventing women from being able to get abortions. Even if a female has gotten rape it does not allow them to get an abortion. Except in Utah, where if rape is involved with the pregnancy; then they can. But other then that it is being prevented from eight states. A forty-two year old minority leader of the Michigan Senate testified that she was raped over twenty years ago and that as she testified; her colleagues didn’t say anything. The quote “You’re either with us, or against us.” relates to this article because many people feel that if a women is pregnant and does not want to go with the birth giving process then they don’t have to and that they should be able to abort the child. In other cases many people feel that it is wrong to murder a child even when the child has not been born yet. The debate that many people have or say goes “If they got pregnant its because they wanted to bring a child into this world, and if it weren’t for that reason then females should just really be more careful.

  28. A Pander War by Politicians on Vaccinations
By: Gloria Borger, CNN chief political analyst

Around the world there have been numerous outbreaks of Measles, Whooping cough and many other diseases, especially in children, but are curable by vaccinations. Many parents have chosen to hold back on vaccinating their children because of previous links of causing diseases, including autism. Even though this is individual choice the government has the mentality that “vaccinations are necessary.” When children are going to public places like Disneyland they are getting sick, which is a problem because other children surround them. Many pediatric doctors and neurosurgeons are making a vaccination mandatory for their patients. This is related to Gaston because the government would like to make it a law to have your children be vaccinated and they only want it their way. He didn't mention any specific countries. The French president pledged to help out. I would expect more people to be Bush’s side after he said “you’re either with us or you’re against us” but I guess not because only 30% of Poland citizens were willing to send their troops into Afghanistan. This ties in with Danforth and Gastons message because if you are not on George Bush’s side your on the terrorists side, and no one wants to be on the terrorist side which made them feel like it was necessary to be on his side. 32. In the Voice Of America article it talks about President Bush and his thoughts about terrorists in the world. He says “whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done.” This was said just nine days after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. He was demanding the terrorists to turn in Osama Bin Laden. Bush said he was the prime suspect of the case. Later on he demanded the Taliban to hand over other leaders that were working with Bin Laden. “They will hand over the Terrorists or they will share in their fate,” he said. By this Bush means that you are with the terrorists or against them. Many countries over the world have shown support for the U.S. and now they have to pick a side.

  33. In the New York Times article ‘U.S. Question: With Us or Against Us?: Issue in Sharp Focus’, Colin Powell, the United States’ Secretary of State, discusses the American fight against terrorism. He believed that the acts committed by the terrorists were cause to obligation to act. His intentions were to “clearly set up a situation in which a wavering voice or an abstaining vote would be regarded as a cowardly turn away from a threat to mankind.” Powell is trying to get the United Nations to act against terrorism using the ultimatum ‘you’re either with us, or you are against us’ just like Gaston does with the villagers against the Beast. Gaston tells all the villagers about the horrors of the Beast, eventually building up a mob, and locking away those who do not share his views, Belle and her father. Powell gives the Security Council the option to act upon terrorism alongside the United States, or be cowards and turn a cold shoulder on it. “How long, he asked, would it be until the Security Council said, ‘Enough, enough.’"

  34. The article that I chose is written by Jack Healy and Michael Paulson and its called “Vaccine Critics Turn Defensive Over Measles,” it explores the topic of vaccinations by choice vs mandatory vaccination. The reason why this article ties in well with the subject of “You’re either with us, or against us” is because it shows the methods of defense people use to protect themselves and their children against those who refuse to be vaccinated against the measles virus. Parents have gone as far as to ban kids from birthday parties and neighborhood play dates. Schools have even sent unvaccinated kids home. Those who are pro-vaccination are fighting ruthlessly against those who have chosen not to vaccinate their children.

  35. It’s hard to imagine, even today, that there would be a section of society that considered themselves “above”, and a part of society that was considered “lower”. This article is showing us how the educated and rich people of Nigeria place themselves at the highest level of society and believed all of the uneducated poor to be lairs, thieves, and of no consequence. The rich treated the poor with such general suspicion, that they put themselves in a single class and it was “their way or the high way”. This would eliminate any chance of a member of the lower classes achieving any success. Granted, in this article, the poor showed incidents of criminal behavior and backward culture, but the rich made the generalization that lower culture had no importance in life. There is a quote in the article about an accident “Three people died,” the 11-year-old said, “but one of them was a poor man.”

The article, “You Are Either With Us or Against Us” they talk about the speech President Bush made after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Bush says that some nations wouldn’t want to contribute in going into war with Iraq, and “they will be held accountable for inactivity”. He says if all nations want to fight they will have to do something. He then says, "You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror”. This relates to what Danforth and Gaston said because Bush is saying that there is no other option if you aren’t with us completely then you’re against us.

  38. In the article “What Putin Has To Say About Syria” Vladimir Putin explains his views on the United States getting involved in the problems of Syria. Putin mentions how he doesn’t want the United Nations to suffer the fate of the League of Nations, which is possible if influential countries such as the United States bypass the United Nations and take military action without Security Council authorization. A new strike by the United States would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. Millions around the world increasingly see America not as a model of democracy but as relying solely on brute force, cobbling coalitions together under the slogan “you’re either with us or against us.” This relates to Danforth and Gaston because Putin is explaining how America is only going to Syria for its long term interest and many Americans only following this slogan “you’re either with us or against us” just because stay with the popular opinion just to save themselves from social rejection. It’s either agree with what the United States government says or be a social outcast.

  39. In an article entitled “You are either with us or against us,” CNN discussed about how President Bush said there is no neutrality in the war against terrorism. He said that coalition partners would be used more than just to show empathy but you would need to prove it and fight for the U.S. along with us. Bush states that “Some nations don't want to contribute troops and we understand that. Other nations can contribute intelligence-sharing. ... But all nations, if they want to fight terror, must do something.” What he basically means is that if your not going to put forth the effort and make a difference with him or put some guidance with him than your useless. Which makes sense because if your “allies” with them and your not helping are you actually an ally, or are you a spy? For example if theres inactivity where a problem is its not only the United States fault but the allies faults too. Its all or nothing.

  40. Bloomberg: Universities becoming bastions of intolerance

During his commencement speech at Harvard University, Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, bashed liberal schools. He called them out on a present day form of McCarthyism and censorship. Most likely knowing that many students and other prospectors at the speech would disagree with his ideas, Bloomberg stated, "If you want the freedom to worship as you wish, to speak as you wish, and to marry whom you wish, you must tolerate my freedom to do so -- or not do so -- too. What I do may offend you. You may find my actions immoral or unjust. But attempting to restrict my freedoms in ways that you would not restrict your own leads only to injustice.” Sizing up those ideas to McCarthyism and the Red Scare he went on to say, ”In the 2012 presidential race the overwhelming majority of campaign contributions from Ivy League faculty went to Barack Obama.” After that message Bloomberg talked about how liberals crush the opinion of conservatives and that conservative workers are becoming scarce. Plenty of people found the speech to be great, but there was also the opposing side. People like Cary Williams, president of the Association of Black Harvard Women, would not stand for what Bloomberg had to say. She talked about the NYPD's stop-and-frisk program, promoted by Bloomberg, and how it focused mainly on colored people. Keyanna Wigglesworth, a junior at Harvard, said, "It's basically racial profiling… And so it's unsettling to me, (for) someone to speak who advocates a racist policy when you want students of color on campus to feel comfortable. It's confusing and I don't think its what Harvard stands for.” This article compares to the phrase,”If you’re not with us, you are against us,” in the way that both sides obviously do not want to hear what the other one has to say. Bloomberg talking about how if you are a liberal you are stomping over the conservatives and don't believe in what others have to say, if you are pro-conservative you are for what Bloomberg has to say and racial profiling. There isn't a road between these two rigged mountains of claims, you are either for one or the other.

  41. In the article “Obama’s War on Isis: A Realist Relents,” John Cassidy discusses President Obama’s speech on September 11, 2014 regarding how the US will handle, degrade, and ultimately destroy the terrorist group ISIL. The President’s objective is to “make sure ISIL is not an ongoing threat to the region.” He is not interested in a brutal war or a significant military escalation, but has still decided to commit the United States to the risky military campaign even with unpredictable potential consequences. During his speech, the President also announced the steps he was planning to take to suppress Isis, including a campaign of air strikes, sending additional troops, and encouraging countries internationally to step up their counterterrorism and humanitarian-relief efforts. President Obama states that our own safety and security depend “upon our willingness to do what it takes to defend this nation and uphold the values that we stand for.” The President’s message is very similar to Danforth’s and Gaston’s message — you are either a supporter of America and anti-terrorism, or not, and the United States will do whatever it takes to ultimately stop terrorism.

  42. In the Article, “Bloomberg: Universities becoming bastions of intolerance” - written by Ray Sanchez – former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg delivered a speech at Harvard expressing his view of many universities today. He accuses them of being extremely liberal and suppressing of conservative ideologies. Bloomberg supports this accusation using observations and analyses concerning conservative public speakers that have visited colleges in recent years. Many conservative speakers have their invitations revoked and some are even shouted off the stage by liberal extremists. Bloomberg believes universities should feel safe to every student despite their beliefs. Bloomberg states, “If you want the freedom to worship as you wish, to speak as you wish and to marry whom you wish, you must tolerate my freedom to do so—or not to do so-“ This article relates to Beauty and The Beast as well as The Crucible because many universities are beginning to install a with us or with out us policy for speakers. Any speakers who do not share the Universities beliefs are not invited to speak.

  43. This article is about how Governor Cuomo wants to change the public school system and teachers’ unions in his second term. One thing that he argues is that the test to become a teacher is too easy to pass and therefore very difficult to actually fire teachers. The president of New York State United Teachers, Karen E. Magee, said that “He (Governor Cuomo) has declared war on the public schools.” She also said “I’ll be happy to stand with the teachers, the students and the parents if the governor wants to have a war.” She also added, ”I’m more than confident that we’ll win.” This relates to Gaston’s and Danforth’s message because both the politicians and the public schools are fighting for what they think is the right thing. Also with this scenario, there is no middle road to walk down. You’re either with the schools, or with the politicians. There’s no in between.

The terrorists in Bush’s situation represent the witches in the crucible. Its either you have the right answer or wrong there’s no in-between. In the article Gorman talks about how a Fox News Channel host said there needs to be a mass killing of Muslim extremists. Jeanine Pirro, Fox News host, states her beliefs days after gunman stormed the Paris office of French satirical magazine killing 12 people, including two Muslim police officers. Pirro thinks we need to supply those Muslims with any weapons they need to kill the Islamic fanatics and after they do kill they, we need to look the other way. She also insists we cut off all aid to any Arab country that does not support the bombing the Muslim Brotherhood. This article connects to Danforth’s and Gaston’s message because Jeanine Pirro is very one sided in this argument. She is all against Muslim extremists and thinks anybody that isn’t against them too should punished (like being cut off from supplies).
